WEDNESDAY 13 Embraces the Monster Within on Mid Death Crisis – Album Review

“Only Wednesday could have a song to dance to about someone losing their head.”

Wednesday 13Sometimes, we must come to terms with our demons and banish them. However, on Wednesday 13‘s latest album, Mid Death Crisis, the theme revolves around confronting our demons rather than being defeated by them, embracing the journey they take us on. This album is gut-busting throughout the entire twelve tracks of this offering. Wednesday 13 is not afraid of who they are, and this album is the antithesis of being a sheep with a halo on their head.

Mid Death Crisis begins with a haunting intro titled “There Is No Such Thing as Monsters” that seems to play a part in the fun, as the creepy voice states that quote over and over, while clearly the next track, titled “Decease and Desist,” is portraying a monster. This is a perfect track that sets the tone for the overall arching theme of the album lyrically. Songs like “No Apologies” continue to solidify what the concept of this album really is, with this musician clearly lacking apologies for what others think. Musically, this is one of the best tracks on the album, with hair metal-type riffs and pulsing drumbeats throughout the entire track that do not slow down one bit. “I Hurt You” is the one moment in this record that slows down a bit and shows a slightly more sensitive side. The music is still heavy, but the message of the song seems to be about how all of these demons and temptations can take the best from someone, forcing us to hurt the ones we love—while also coming to terms with that. “Decapitation” is another track that stands out with dark and heavy riffs, but at the same time, it’s the bounciest of all the songs. Wednesday 13 really stepped out on this song, as his haunting vocal delivery is layered over a bit of a happier riff. Only Wednesday could have a song to dance to about someone losing their head. “Xanaxtasy” seems to be the point of the album where Wednesday just comes to terms with the monster inside and wants someone to share that monster with—giving in to temptation but having fun while doing so.

“Sick and Violent” is a perfect closer for this record. Normally, on the outro of an album, artists may slow down, but Wednesday 13 is doing the opposite. The last track on this album, musically and lyrically, encompasses and summarizes the album in full. Mid Death Crisis is about facing darkness, temptation, and life, and having to come to the realization that we all have something inside us that we need to come to terms with. Any fans looking for a continuation of what Wednesday 13 has put together in the past will be thrilled with the new gory offering that has been put together.
